Muirfield is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the club that wrote the original rules of golf in 1744. The course in Gullane opened in 1891 and has hosted 16 Open Championships, most recently Phil Mickelson's win in 2013. The Perry Bros play it on October 22, 2026, day 3 of our Scotland trip.

The Honourable Company began on the Links of Leith in 1744, when its members drew up the original rules of golf for a Silver Club competition. The club moved to Musselburgh and then, in 1891, to Muirfield, where it hosted the first 72-hole Open Championship the following year.
The front nine runs clockwise around the edge of the property and the back nine runs counterclockwise inside it, so the wind is never in the same direction for long. Open champions here include Harry Vardon, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo (twice), Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson.
Visitors traditionally play fourballs in the morning and foursomes (alternate shot) in the afternoon. That is the plan for our 36-hole day.
